The Polytechnic University of the Philippines, College of Education conducts its first seminar for School Year 2014-2015 last June 27, at PUP Bulwagang Balagtas.

Entitled “Integrating Drama in the K- to 12 Classroom” this seminar aims to inculcate to the future educators the importance of versatility and creativity inside the classroom.

“[Versatility and creativity] that’s the kind of expertise our government officials, especially CHED and DEPED would like to develop among the future teacher educators, that you are all imaginative, that you are all creative so that you can develop the different 21st century skills embodied in the framework of K to 12” said Dean Gomez in her opening remarks.

Dr. Rommel Maglaya, faculty at St, Sholastica’s College and the resource speaker of the said event enthusiastically shared his expertise on both teaching and acting. Armed with his knowledge, wit and humor, he was able to further discuss that drama is not only for English and Filipino Majors. Drama could also be used as an exciting teaching strategy even in Math, T.LE. and computer classes.

“Our goal in the classroom as teachers is to keep the attention of our students; our goal is to tickle their imagination sometimes, and drama could be one of the tools, Integrating drama in the classroom doesn’t mean that we have to teach students to be actors and actresses rather we integrate the disciplines of drama in teaching.” Dr. Maglaya explained. He also elaborated the advantages of drama and its great relevance to the components of K to 12 if we are to use it inside the classroom.

Coed Students gave a positive feedback on the said seminar “It helps me to realize that k to 12 is not at all a burden, instead it enhances and broadens our horizons to teach effectively, like in my case, I am a math Major, so it’s surprising that math majors can also use Drama as a teaching method, it is good that our college is preparing the students as they come face to face with k to 12” Joseph Pantig of BSED MT 3-1D remarked. Moreover, Dean Gomez told the students to look forward to more seminars regarding K to 12 prepared by the college.
